VCF 9.0 - Speaker Biography

Daniel Kottke

Daniel became friends with Steve Jobs at Reed College by virtue of a mutual interest in Eastern religion and philosophy. This led to a stint helping with the assembly and testing of Apple 1 computers in Jobs' garage in 1976, and a lifelong interest in computing.

Daniel spent 8 years at Apple and went from debugging Apple II printed circuit boards to building Apple III and Macintosh prototypes. His design work on the Macintosh keyboard led to years of consulting work as an embedded engineer and in the late 1990s as a telecommunications engineer at Vertical Networks.

In 2003 he co-founded CubeRoot Labs to create the successful TIX Digital Art Clock. In 2004 he worked on a fingerprint scanner and in 2005 on a hand-held pulse monitor/stress management product, the emWave.

He is currently the producer and host of a local cable variety show The Next Step, trying to find customers for his "messagepod" scrolling message display, and serving as Vice President and Engineer for Earthgrid, a web commerce site for full-resolution online video distribution.

In 1998, Daniel completed law school after four years of night classes.
